How to calculate zakat

  1. Add up your cash, bank savings, gold and silver, and the value of business stock.
  2. Subtract debts that are currently due.
  3. Compare the total with the nisab: the value of 85 g of pure gold.
  4. If you reach the nisab and a full lunar year (hawl) has passed, pay 2.5%.

Example: SAR 100,000 held for a full Hijri year → zakat of SAR 2,500.

Zakat on jewellery that is worn

Scholars differ: the majority hold that no zakat is due on gold worn as jewellery, while Shaykh Ibn Baz and Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen held that it is due if it reaches the nisab. Include it if you follow the second view, and ask a local scholar if unsure.
